← All Olson Travels

Two of the most jaw-dropping parks in America, 90 minutes apart: Zion's soaring red canyon walls and river hikes, and Bryce Canyon's otherworldly army of orange hoodoos. Easy family trails, a horseback ride in each park for our horse-crazy crew, Junior Ranger badges for all four kids, and some of the darkest, most star-filled skies in the country β€” all in perfect low-60s spring weather.

πŸ‘¨β€πŸ‘©β€πŸ‘§β€πŸ‘¦ The party

Chase (Mom) & Chad (Dad) + Reid Evelyn David Charlie

Base the whole week in Springdale, right at Zion's gate, and day-trip to Bryce. One unpack, one rental SUV, maximum canyon time.

✨ Why this one

🐎 Built for Evelyn

Guided horseback rides in BOTH parks β€” along the Virgin River under Zion's walls, and down among Bryce's hoodoos on the Peekaboo loop. A dream week for a rider.

πŸ₯Ύ Kid-sized adventure

Flat river walks and a wade up the Narrows for the littles; Angels Landing chains and hoodoo scrambles for the big kids. Everyone finds their edge.

🌑️ Peak-perfect timing

Late March = 60s and sunny in Zion, crisp red-rock-on-snow drama up at Bryce (8,000 ft), and it's before the summer crush.

🌌 Dark skies

Bryce is a certified Dark Sky Park β€” a ranger astronomy night and a sky full of Milky Way the kids will never forget.

⛰️ Zion National Park

2,000-foot sandstone walls, a river you hike in, and a shuttle that keeps the canyon car-free. Home base: Springdale, literally at the gate.

πŸ₯Ύ Trails, easiest β†’ boldest

Pa'rus Trail β€” flat, paved, bikes/strollers OK3.5 mi Β· easy
Riverside Walk β€” paved to the Narrows mouth2.2 mi Β· easy
Lower/Middle Emerald Pools β€” waterfalls2–3 mi Β· easy-mod
Watchman Trail β€” big views, no exposure3.3 mi Β· moderate
Canyon Overlook β€” best view-per-effort1 mi Β· moderate
The Narrows (bottom-up) β€” wade the riveras far as you like
Angels Landing β€” chains, big drop-offs5.4 mi Β· strenuous Β· permit
🎟️ Angels Landing needs a permit (seasonal lottery via recreation.gov). Apply in the advance lottery ~2–3 months out, or the day-before lottery on-site. Only for Reid Evelyn + a parent β€” big exposure, not for the littles.

🚌 The shuttle

Spring–fall the scenic drive is car-free β€” ride the free Zion Canyon shuttle from the Visitor Center. Park in Springdale and take the town shuttle to the gate, or walk in.

πŸŽ–οΈ Junior Ranger

Free booklet at the Visitor Center β€” all four kids can earn a badge (activities + a ranger program). Turn it in Day 6 for the ceremony.

🧑 Bryce Canyon National Park

Not really a canyon β€” a giant amphitheater of thousands of orange-pink spires called hoodoos. Higher (8,000–9,000 ft), colder, and completely unlike anywhere else on Earth. ~1h50m from Springdale.

πŸ₯Ύ Do-this-first

Navajo Loop β†’ Queen's Garden β€” descend into the hoodoos3 mi Β· moderate Β· ⭐ the one
Rim Trail, Sunrise→Sunset — flat, top-of-the-world1 mi · easy
Peekaboo Loop β€” deeper hoodoo immersion (also the horse route)5.5 mi Β· strenuous
Scenic drive β€” Rainbow, Inspiration, Bryce Pointsdrive-up overlooks

🐎 Ride the hoodoos

Canyon Trail Rides runs guided horse/mule trips down into the amphitheater on the Peekaboo loop β€” a bucket-list ride for Evelyn. Book ahead; age/weight limits apply.

🌌 Dark Sky Park

Among the darkest skies in the U.S. Check for a ranger astronomy program / full-moon hike, and just look up β€” the Milky Way is right there.

πŸ§₯ It's cold up here. 8,000 ft in late March means frosty mornings, possible snow, and red rock dusted white (stunning). Real layers, hats, gloves, traction on shoes for icy rim paths.
🏨 Where to stay

Springdale (home base) 6 nights

  • Cable Mountain Lodge β€” at the pedestrian gate, big rooms/suites, pool
  • Cliffrose, Curio by Hilton β€” riverfront, gorgeous grounds (splurge)
  • SpringHill Suites / Hampton β€” reliable suites that sleep 6
  • Zion Lodge (in-park) β€” the magic option; books ~13 months out

Near Bryce (optional 1 night)

  • Bryce Canyon Lodge β€” historic, in-park, steps from the rim
  • Ruby's Inn / Best Western Plus β€” big family rooms, pool, right outside the gate

Splitting one night here turns Bryce from a long day-trip into a sunrise-to-stars experience.

🍽️ Where to eat

Springdale

  • Oscar's CafΓ© β€” burritos + patio, kid heaven
  • Zion Canyon Brew Pub β€” burgers, river deck
  • Whiptail Grill β€” green-chile everything in an old gas station
  • King's Landing Bistro β€” the nice dinner
  • MeMe's CafΓ© β€” crΓͺpes; CafΓ© Soleil β€” breakfast/lunch
  • Deep Creek Coffee β€” early trail fuel

On the road / Bryce

  • Bryce Canyon Lodge dining room
  • Ruby's Inn β€” buffet, easy with a hungry crew
  • Grocery run in Hurricane/St. George Day 1 for trail snacks + waters
✈️ Getting there

Fly

MSN β†’ Las Vegas (LAS) is the closest good gateway (~2h40m to Zion). Delta connects via ATL/MSP (Chase = Delta Gold). Salt Lake City (SLC) is the alt β€” a Delta hub with more nonstops, but ~4h to Zion.

Drive

Rent a full-size SUV or minivan at LAS (6 people + gear). One base in Springdale means minimal daily driving except the Bryce day.

πŸŽ’ Know before you go

Weather (late March)

Zion: ~62Β°F day / 38Β°F night, mostly sunny. Bryce: ~45Β°F day / 22Β°F night, snow possible. Pack layers, sun + cold both.

Passes & permits

America the Beautiful annual pass ($80) covers both parks. Angels Landing = separate lottery permit. Narrows bottom-up needs no permit (top-down does).

Gear

Broken-in trail shoes, day packs, refillable waters, sun hats + sunscreen (high-desert sun is strong), warm layers for Bryce, and Narrows rentals (neoprene + stick) in town.

Altitude & sun

Bryce sits at 8,000 ft β€” take it easy, hydrate hard. The whole region is dry and sunny; push water on the kids all day.
