🎠 The wildcard worth watching: the Carrousel de Saumur — the Cadre Noir's biggest annual show — is held every July. It ran Jul 11–12 in 2026. The 2027 dates aren't published yet. If they land inside this window, restructure the trip around them.

Omaha Beach, Pointe du Hoc, the American Cemetery. For a 13-year-old this is the kind of day that reframes a history class permanently.

David & Charlie Disneyland Paris

Two parks, and unlike Tokyo it has a proper park hopper — roughly €15–20/day over a one-park ticket. Two days covers both properly.

Chambord's double-helix staircase, Chenonceau arching over the river, Amboise where Leonardo da Vinci is buried. Castles that actually hold kids' attention.

🚐 Pick the van up on day 5, not day 1. A car in central Paris is a liability — parking is expensive and the metro is better. Rent at a city depot on the way out to Normandy and drop it at CDG at the end.

✈️ Ending at Disneyland Paris is deliberate: it sits 40 minutes from Charles de Gaulle, so the last morning is a short hop instead of a cross-country drive.

🏆 Why this beats Japan for this particular summer: a genuine equestrian pilgrimage for Evelyn, a Disney park that hops, cooler weather, roughly 4 hours less flying each way, a 7-hour time change instead of 14, and gîtes that actually sleep six without Japan's room-occupancy gymnastics. Japan's Pokémon advantage is real and unmatched — but Japan is better in cherry blossom season anyway, which is exactly what spring break 2028 is for.

Thirteen nights. Overnight flight out, so you land Tuesday morning and lose Monday to the air.

🚇 Get everyone a Navigo or carnet of metro tickets on arrival. Paris with four kids works far better underground than in a car.

The D-Day beaches — Omaha Beach, the Normandy American Cemetery at Colleville-sur-Mer, and Pointe du Hoc, still cratered. Take the half-day guided tour; a good guide is the difference between a field and a story
Bayeux Tapestry — 70 metres of 11th-century embroidery telling the Norman conquest. Genuinely gripping, and short enough for younger attention spans
Mont-Saint-Michel ~1h30 — the abbey on the tidal island. Go late afternoon when the day coaches leave

DAYS 8–11Jul 19–22🐎 Loire Valley · Saumur

Drive south to Saumur ~3h30 and settle into a gîte for four nights — the one place on this trip you unpack properly
The Cadre Noir — a Matinale at 10:30: an hour in the grand arena plus the stables and behind-the-scenes. Evelyn's day. Book ahead
Château de Saumur above the town, and the troglodyte cave villages and mushroom farms cut into the tufa cliffs
Chambord — 440 rooms and a double-helix staircase attributed to Leonardo. Rent bikes on the estate
Chenonceau — the château built out across the river on arches. The prettiest one, and the easiest to love
Amboise and Clos Lucé, where Leonardo spent his last years; the garden has full-size models of his machines

🍄 Saumur sits in the middle of the château belt, so four nights here covers the whole Loire without repacking once.

Buy the Park Hopper — roughly €15–20/day on top of a one-park ticket, and worth it here because the two parks sit side by side
Multi-day tickets drop the per-day rate sharply: 2 days runs about €159–200 total per person versus €62–100+ for a single peak day

This tab is the reason the trip exists. Japan's honest ceiling for a serious young rider is a free public park with horses in it and a 90-minute arena lesson. France offers something categorically different.

🐎 Le Cadre Noir de Saumur

France's national riding school, founded in 1825, and one of the small handful of classical equestrian institutions that genuinely matter — the French counterpart to Vienna's Spanish Riding School. Its écuyers wear the black uniform the school is named for.

Les Matinales — run February through October, so mid-July is squarely in season. A one-hour performance in the grand arena at 10:30, plus access behind the scenes: the stables, the working areas, the horses out of the ring
What she'd actually see: the airs relevés — courbette, croupade, cabriole, the classical "airs above the ground," where the horse leaves the ground entirely under complete control. It is the oldest and most technical work in the sport
Why it matters for a saddle-seat rider: Cadre Noir is a different discipline, but it's the same fundamentals taken to their absolute limit — collection, impulsion, the horse carrying itself. Watching that live rewires what a rider thinks is possible

🎠 The Carrousel de Saumur — the school's great annual event, held every July at the Place du Chardonnet. The Cadre Noir perform alongside the Cavalry School and the Tank Museum's vehicles. It ran Jul 11–12 in 2026 and the 2027 dates aren't out yet. Watch for them. If they fall in this window, it becomes the centrepiece of the whole trip.

🏇 Saumur is a horse town, not just a school

The Institut Français du Cheval et de l'Équitation is headquartered here — Saumur is the centre of French equestrian life the way Lexington is for Kentucky
Riding schools and trekking centres throughout the Loire; a guided hack past vineyards and châteaux is very bookable
Château de Saumur itself holds a horse museum collection, and the town's whole identity is built around the cavalry tradition

⚠️ The trap to avoid: Vienna

The obvious answer to "horse trip in Europe" is the Lipizzaners at the Spanish Riding School — and July is exactly the wrong month. The stallions decamp to the Federal Stud at Piber for July and early August. Vienna substitutes a foals-and-mares show and extended architectural tours; pleasant, but not what you'd cross an ocean for.

🐴 Worth saying to Evelyn ahead of time: the Cadre Noir is a working academy, not a show. The value is in watching riders at the top of the discipline do quiet, precise, difficult things — which is a very different experience from a performance, and a better one.

🏠 Sleeping six — France makes this easy

This is where France quietly wins. Where Japan caps hotel rooms at 2–4 people and enforces it, France has an entire established category of self-catering family rental: the gîte. Three bedrooms, a kitchen, a washing machine, and a garden, rented by the week.

Saumur gîtes — simple ones list around €490–510 per week in July/August. A 3-bedroom, 3-bathroom place sleeping six runs roughly €1,150–1,450 per week. Either is a fraction of six people in hotel rooms
Most run Saturday to Saturday, which is worth knowing when you set the dates — our Loire block is Mon–Fri, so look for flexible or short-stay listings, or shift a day
Saumur's tourist office lists vetted gîtes directly, and there are 480+ properties in the area on the usual rental sites

Where to base, leg by leg

Paris (4 nights) — a 2–3 bedroom apartment rather than two hotel rooms. Aim for the 5th, 6th or 7th arrondissement: walkable, safe, near the metro
Bayeux (2 nights) — small, walkable, and the natural base for the beaches. Gîte or a family hotel
Saumur (4 nights) — the gîte. This is the unpack-properly stop
Disneyland Paris (2 nights) — stay on-property or at a partner hotel for the early-entry benefit; it also puts you 40 minutes from CDG for the flight home

🚐 Driving

8-seat van, booked early — French rental fleets are thin on large vehicles in July
Automatic transmission must be requested explicitly. Manual is the default in France and the supply of automatics is limited and pricier. Book it months out
Pick up on day 5 leaving Paris; drop at CDG on day 14. No car in the city
Autoroute tolls are real — budget roughly €120–180 across this route, plus fuel at European prices
Watch for low-emission zone (ZFE) rules in Paris; a rental should be compliant, but confirm at pickup

🅿️ Mont-Saint-Michel parking sits well back from the abbey with a shuttle. Budget the walk time; it's longer than it looks.

Where the savings actually come from

Flight time and cost. MSN→Paris is roughly 4 hours shorter each way than MSN→Tokyo's ~14h45, through cheaper connections
Gîtes sleep six for one price. No apartment-hotel hunting, no two-room bookings, no occupancy-cap gymnastics
Self-catering. Four nights with a kitchen and a market cuts the food line hard for a party of six
No rail pass question. A van replaces Japan's ¥80,000-per-adult JR Pass calculation entirely
Jet lag. A 7-hour shift instead of 14 — you lose roughly one day to recovery, not three
